The confidence in democratic institutions is undergoing a crisis which tends to become endemic in liberal democracies. This translates into a growing abstention from electoral processes, the discrediting of political parties as well as the rise of extreme political formations, and the emergence of "anti-systemism" or "anti-politics". This Conference explores the factors that contribute towards these trends and reflects on policies that can restore citizens' trust in political institutions, as a necessary foundation of democracy. Furthermore, an ISPD research project on institutional trust in Cyprus will also be presented in the Conference.
