In early May 2024, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, held meetings in Cyprus, highlighting the political divide on the Cyprus issue amongst the Turkish Cypriot community. Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot leadership under Ersin Tatar, insist on sovereign equality as a precondition for the resumption of talks, while the Turkish Cypriot solution forces, mainly the Turkish Cypriot Left, are promoting a short negotiation process aimed at achieving a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation (BBF). The leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Ersin Tatar, reiterated his refusal to participate in negotiations without recognition of Turkish Cypriot sovereignty and set conditions for the resumption of talks. The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and other parties of the Turkish Cypriot Left disagree with Tatar's stance accused Tatar for submitting maximalist proposals that endanger the interests of the T/c community, insisting on BBF.
