General Information:
The 2025 New York City mayoral election was held on November 4, 2025 to choose the city’s chief executive for a four-year term starting January 1, 2026.
Turnout surpassed two million ballots cast — 2,037,183 counted — equal to about 39.9% of 5,103,941 registered voters, the city’s highest mayoral turnout in decades.
The race unfolded amid intense political polarization and a rare three-way general election featuring Democrat Zohran Mamdani, independent Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. It was historic in outcome, electing NYC’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor.
Election Results:
- Zohran Mamdani (Democratic, also on Working Families line): 50.4%
- Andrew Cuomo (Independent “Fight and Deliver”): 41.6%
- Curtis Sliwa (Republican, also on “Protect Animals” line): 7.1%
Electoral System
New York City uses different rules for primaries and the general election.
- General election: first-past-the-post (plurality wins).
- Primaries & special elections: ranked-choice voting (RCV) for Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough Presidents, and City Council (Charter amendment approved by voters in 2019).
- The mayoral term is four years; the winner takes office on January 1 following the election. Consecutive mayoral terms are limited by law.
- Eligible voters are U.S. citizens who are NYC residents for at least 30 days, aged 18+ by Election Day, and registered by the statutory deadline.
