General Information

General elections were held in Mozambique on 9 October 2024. The results are as follows:
Presidential Elections:
Daniel Chapo: FRELIMO Party (Elected)
Ossufo Momade: RENAMO Party
Lutero Simango: MDM Party
Venâncio Mondlane: PODEMOS Party

Electoral system:
Presidential Election: The president is elected through a majoritarian system. To win outright, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate achieves this majority, a second round is held between the top two candidates.

Parliamentary Elections: For the Assembly of the Republic, 248 out of 250 seats are filled using party-list proportional representation, based on the D'Hondt method. The remaining two seats represent Mozambicans living abroad and are filled through a plurality voting system. Members of parliament serve five-year terms.

Provincial Governors: For the second time in Mozambique's history, provincial governors were also elected directly, following reforms that allowed for more regional autonomy. This was a significant demand by opposition parties like RENAMO during peace negotiations.
