Election Information
General Information
The elections for the State Great Khural (unicameral Parliament of Mongolia) were held on June 28, 2024. These were the first elections after the 2023 constitutional reform, which increased the number of seats from 76 to 126 and introduced a mixed electoral system. The results were as follows:
Election Results:
Majoritarian seats:
Mongolian People’s Party: 3,619,950 votes (38.65%), 50 seats
Democratic Party: 3,135,988 votes (33.48%), 26 seats
HUN Party: 636,648 votes (6.80%), 2 seats
Proportional representation:
Mongolian People’s Party: 509,482 votes (35.01%), 18 seats
Democratic Party: 438,506 votes (30.13%), 16 seats
HUN Party: 151,111 votes (10.38%), 6 seats
National Coalition: 75,196 votes (5.17%), 4 seats
Civil Will-Green Party: 73,006 votes (5.02%), 4 seats
Electoral System:
Mongolia now uses a mixed electoral system: 78 members are elected through a majoritarian system (multiple non-transferable vote) in 13 multi-member constituencies. The remaining 48 seats are allocated by proportional representation using a closed list and national distribution.
The electoral thresholds for proportional representation are:
- 4% for individual parties
- 5% for coalitions of two parties
- 7% for coalitions of three or more parties
Candidate lists must follow the “zipper system” (alternating gender order), maintain a 70:30 gender ratio, and cover at least 50% of the seats in each constituency.
