About the electoral system
The president of Mexico is elected by majority vote in one round for a six-year term (sexenio) and cannot be re-elected. The new president is sworn in on October 1. The House of Representatives has 500 members: 300 elected by majority vote in unicameral constituencies and 200 by proportional representation in five multi-camera constituencies. No party can hold more than 300 seats. The Senate has 128 members: 96 elected in 32 tripartite districts (two for the first party, one for the second) and 32 by proportional representation at the national level. The National Electoral Institute (INE) oversees federal elections, including preparations, vote counting and validation.
