Maria Athanasiou

Maria Athanasiou is the founding partner of M. Athanasiou & Associates LLC based in Cyprus, and she is a member of the Cyprus Bar Association. She is a Lecturer in Law at European University Cyprus and the Cyprus Maritime Academy. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of South Wales and a Master’s degree in International Commercial Law from Cardiff University. She is also pursuing her Doctorate in the field of the Law of the Sea at the University of Nicosia. Her latest publication was features in The Handbook of Research on the Future of the Maritime Industry (Hershey, PA: IGI Global, 2022) edited by Nihan Senbursa. Maria is also certified in the fields of International Water Law from the University of Geneva, Environmental Law and Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Research Methodology from the University of London and ECOPORTIL which includes certifications on air quality, energy efficiency and Climate change, water quality with an emphasis on Oil Pollution and BWM, waste management at ships and ports, eco-mapping of environmental conditions in ports, environmental management systems (ISO, EMAS, PERS) and legislation governing environmental protection of areas surrounding ports. She is also involved in various exhibitions concerning energy security in the framework of international law.
