General Information
The presidential elections in Lithuania were held on May 26, 2024. The election results were as follows:
Election Results:
Gitanas Nausėda / Independent: 886,874 votes (75.29%)
Ingrida Šimonytė / Homeland Union: 291,054 votes (24.71%)
Electoral System:
Lithuania uses a two-round system to elect the President of the Republic. In order to be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of all votes cast (including invalid ones), and either: voter turnout must exceed 50%, or the candidate's share must represent at least one-third of all registered voters.
If no candidate meets these criteria, a second round is held between the top two contenders. The President is elected for a five-year term and may serve up to two terms. Candidates must be at least 40 years old, have at least one Lithuanian parent, have resided in the country for at least 3 years, and must not have a criminal record or be in active military service. To be eligible to run, a candidate must collect at least 20,000 signatures from citizens.
