General Information:
On October 27, 2024, parliamentary elections were held in Japan following the early dissolution of the House of Representatives by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba (only 8 days after assuming office).
Election Results:
LDP: 191 seats, 20,867,762 votes (38.46% - constituencies), 14,582,690 votes (26.73% - proportional)
CDP: 148 seats, 15,740,860 votes (29.01% - constituencies), 11,564,222 votes (21.20% - proportional)
Ishin: 38 seats, 6,048,103 votes (11.15% - constituencies), 5,105,127 votes (9.36% - proportional)
DPP: 28 seats, 2,349,584 votes (4.33% - constituencies), 6,172,434 votes (11.32% - proportional)
Komeito: 24 seats, 730,401 votes (1.35% - constituencies), 5,964,415 votes (10.93% - proportional)
Reiwa Shinsengumi: 9 seats, 425,445 votes (0.78% - constituencies), 3,805,060 votes (6.98% - proportional)
Japanese Communist Party: 8 seats, 3,695,807 votes (6.81% - constituencies), 3,362,966 votes (6.16% - proportional)
Sanseitō: 3 seats, 1,357,189 votes (2.50% - constituencies), 1,870,347 votes (3.43% - proportional)
Conservative Party of Japan: 3 seats, 155,837 votes (0.29% - constituencies), 1,145,622 votes (2.10% - proportional)
Others/Independents: 12 seats, 2,600,000 votes (4.67% - constituencies)
Electoral System:
The House of Representatives has 465 seats: 289 are elected from single-member districts (first-past-the-post), and 176 from proportional representation blocs via party lists. Voters cast two ballots: one for a district candidate and one for a party. Candidates receiving <10% in their district are disqualified from proportional seats. A redistricting was applied in 2024 (10 new districts, 13 abolished).
