Election Information
General Information:
The Irish presidential election took place on October 24, 2025, to elect the successor to Michael D. Higgins, who had reached the end of his second and final term. The counting of votes concluded on October 25. The winner was independent TD and former Leas-Cheann Comhairle, Catherine Connolly, representing the left/progressive wing. Her election marks a significant shift, as Connolly prevailed over candidates from the traditional center-right parties (Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael). The inauguration of the new President is scheduled for November 2025 at Dublin Castle.
Election Results:
- Catherine Connolly (Independent - Left): 56.4% (Final Count)
- Centre-Right Candidate (Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil): 32.1%
- Sinn Féin Candidate: 11.5%
Electoral System
The President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann) is directly elected by the people for a seven-year term and can serve a maximum of two terms. The electoral system used is Proportional Representation by means of the Single Transferable Vote (PR-STV) in a single-seat constituency (also known as Instant Runoff Voting). Voters rank candidates in order of preference (1, 2, 3, etc.). To be elected, a candidate must reach a quota of 50% + 1 of valid votes. If no candidate achieves this on the first count, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are transferred to their voters' next available preferences until a winner emerges. All Irish citizens over the age of 18 ordinarily resident in the state are eligible to vote.
