Electoral System
The President of Chile is elected through a two-round system: a candidate must obtain more than 50% of valid votes to win in the first round; otherwise, the top two candidates proceed to a runoff. The Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputadas y Diputados) consists of 155 members elected in 28 multi-member districts (3–8 seats each) using an open-list proportional representation system with the d’Hondt allocation method. The Senate (Senado) has 50 members serving eight-year terms; half of its composition (25 seats) is renewed at each general election, with senators elected in 16 districts (2–5 seats each) through a similar proportional system. A constitutional reform that entered into force in 2022 reinstated compulsory voting for national elections and referendums; unjustified abstention results in a monetary fine. All Chilean citizens aged 18 and over, registered in the electoral rolls and not deprived of their political rights, are eligible to vote.
