Information on Elections

General Information:
The Canadian federal election was held on April 28, 2025, to elect members to the 45th Parliament. This election followed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, with newly appointed Liberal leader Mark Carney leading the party into the vote. The election was based on an expanded 343-seat electoral map following the 2021 census.

Election Results:
Liberal Party (Mark Carney): 169 seats
Conservative Party (Pierre Poilievre): 143 seats
Bloc Québécois (Yves-François Blanchet): 23 seats
New Democratic Party (NDP) (Jagmeet Singh): 7 seats
Green Party: 1 seat
Independents: 0 seats

The Liberal Party won a minority government, falling three seats short of a majority in the House of Commons.

Electoral System:
Canada uses a first-past-the-post electoral system. Each of the 343 electoral districts, known as ridings, elects one Member of Parliament (MP). The candidate with the most votes in each riding wins the seat. This single-member plurality system often benefits larger political parties and does not require a majority of the popular vote to win a majority of seats.

This electoral process shapes the composition of the House of Commons and determines the ability of the winning party to form either a majority or minority government.
