General Information
On June 1, 2025, the second round of Poland’s presidential elections was held to determine the new head of state. The elections saw a high voter turnout and a closely contested race between conservative and liberal candidates.
Election Results:
Karol Nawrocki (Law and Justice, PiS): 50.89%
Rafał Trzaskowski (Civic Coalition): 49.11%
Electoral System:
Poland elects its president using a two-round system. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round, a runoff is held between the top two contenders. The first round took place on May 18, 2025, followed by the second round on June 1, 2025.
Polish citizens aged 18 and above are eligible to vote. The president serves a five-year term and holds significant powers, including the ability to veto legislation and represent Poland internationally. The National Electoral Commission oversees the process to ensure fair and transparent elections.
Key Candidates:
Karol Nawrocki: Conservative historian and former head of the Institute of National Remembrance, supported by the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS). Advocates for traditional Catholic values, nationalism, and a skeptical stance toward the EU.
Rafał Trzaskowski: Liberal mayor of Warsaw, representing the Civic Coalition, promoting progressive reforms and stronger ties with the EU.
