General Information:
The Irish presidential election was held on Friday, 24 October 2025, to elect the 10th President of Ireland. The incumbent President, Michael D. Higgins, was ineligible to run again, having served the maximum two seven-year terms permitted. Turnout was recorded at 45.8% of registered voters. The election was marked by the withdrawal of one candidate (Jim Gavin) mid-campaign (who remained on the ballot) and a historically high number of spoiled votes (12.9% of the total cast).
Election Results (First Preferences):
- Catherine Connolly (Independent): 63.4% (914,143 votes)
- Heather Humphreys (Fine Gael): 29.5% (424,987 votes)
- Jim Gavin (Fianna Fáil): 7.2% (103,568 votes)
Electoral System
The President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann) is elected directly by the people. The voting system is the Single Transferable Vote (STV), where voters rank candidates in order of preference. A candidate must exceed the quota to be elected. (In this election, Catherine Connolly was elected on the first count). To be a candidate, one must be nominated by either at least 20 members of the Oireachtas (Parliament) or by at least four local authorities (county or city councils). The presidential term of office lasts seven years. The right to vote is given to all Irish citizens aged 18 or over who are registered to vote.
