Electoral System The US electoral system dates back to 1787 and sets the rules for electing a president, indirectly and in one round. The US founders saw this system as a compromise between the direct election of a president by the people and the election of a president by Congress.
There are 538 electors and most of them are local officials of their party. Their names do not appear on the ballots, which only list the names of the two parties' presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
The number of electors each US state has is calculated from the sum of the representatives it has in the House of Representatives (which depends on its population) and the two senators each state elects.
According to the US Constitution, in the event of a tie, Congress will elect the 47th president of the United States. More specifically and as reported by APE, the new members of the House of Representatives will elect the president and the Senate the vice president.
The candidate who wins the most votes in a state automatically wins all of its electors. The exceptions are Nebraska and Maine, which divide the electors proportionally between the two candidates.

Analysis of CNN Exit Poll Results from 2016, 2020, and 2024
For understanding trends, the 2024 exit polls include interviews with thousands of voters regarding their political views and demographic profiles. Based on CNN's exit poll tool for the 2024 elections, female voters leaned towards Kamala Harris, while male voters favored Donald Trump. Despite the Democrats' efforts to mobilize women voters around the issue of abortion, Kamala did not surpass the advantage among women that Biden and Clinton had in previous elections.
Trump showed an advantage among Latino men in the 2016 and 2024 elections, as well as a consistent lead among White men. Kamala appears to have been supported by Latina women, as well as by Black men and Black women.
A consistent advantage for President Trump is the 18–44 age group, whereas voters aged 45+ seem to have chosen Vice President Kamala. Beyond Trump’s advantage among younger generations, he also appears to have won over new voters who do not typically participate in the electoral process.
