The Institute of Studies for Politics and Democracy, in collaboration with Neapolis University Pafos, is organizing a symposium on December 13 at 5:30 p.m., at the “Attikon” Cultural Centre, titled “Modern Wars and New Threats in the Era of Polycrises.”
The speakers will be: Dr. Panagiotis Tsakonas, Professor of International Relations, Security Studies, and Foreign Policy Analysis at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and member of the ISPD Scientific Council; Mr. Evangelos Georgousis, retired Air Vice-Marshal (HAF) and member of the Board of Directors of ELIAMEP; Dr. Marios Panagiotis Efthymiopoulos, Associate Professor of International Security and Strategy, Chair of the Department of History, Politics, and International Studies at Neapolis University Pafos, and President of Strategy International (SI).
Opening remarks will be delivered by: Dr. Christoforos Fokaides, President of ISPD and former Minister of Defence; Professor Pantelis Sklias, Rector of Neapolis University Pafos; Mr. Phedonas Phedonos, Mayor of Pafos.
The symposium is organized to mark the recent publication by the Institute of Studies for Politics and Democracy of the book “Cyprus in the Era of Polycrises: The Major Challenges in 24 Questions and Answers.”
The discussion will focus on the conduct of modern wars, with an emphasis on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the emergence of new security challenges that fuel crises.
In this context, we aim to explore how modern states, especially smaller ones like Cyprus, can enhance their overall resilience in the new era of polycrises. How can new hybrid threats be effectively addressed, and what is the importance of having a national security strategy? How can the European Union contribute to addressing emerging security challenges? What is NATO’s role, and what is the significance of participation in collective security arrangements, especially for smaller states?
