Election information

General Information
On March 11, 2025, general elections were held in Greenland to elect the 31 members of the Parliament (Inatsisartut). The results are as follows:

Election Results:
Demokraatit, Jens-Frederik Nielsen: 10 seats, 30.26% (28.52%)
Naleraq: 8 seats, 24.77%
Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA): 7 seats, 21.62%
Siumut: 4 seats,14.88%

Electoral System:
Greenland’s electoral system is based on proportional representation, with the 31 members elected via list voting in a single nationwide constituency. Seats are allocated using the D’Hondt method, with no official electoral threshold.

The election campaign focused on issues of independence from Denmark, social issues such as education and healthcare, as well as the exploitation of natural resources. Recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his desire to gain control of Greenland also influenced the political climate, with most parties rejecting the idea.

After the elections, no party secured an absolute majority. Jens-Frederik Nielsen of the Democrats formed a coalition government with the parties Inuit Ataqatigiit, Siumut and Atassut, securing a total of 23 out of the 31 parliamentary seats. Nielsen took office as the youngest prime minister in Greenland’s history, at the age of 33.

The new government aims to strengthen ties with Denmark, while also working towards full independence for Greenland. Nielsen emphasized the importance of national unity and political stability, especially amidst external pressures.
