On July 5, 2024, a Presidential Election was held in Iran to elect a president, following the death of former president Ibrahim Raishi. The results are as follows:

Masoud Pezeshkian: 16,384,403 votes, 54.76%
Saeed Jalili: 13,538,179 votes, 45.24%


About the electoral system
Iran's president is elected every four years by direct popular vote, according to Article 114 of the Iranian Constitution. The next election, initially set for June 18, 2025, was held earlier due to the president's death. The president is the highest directly elected official, second only to the Supreme Leader. The voting age is 18. Any Shia Muslim Iranian citizen loyal to the Constitution and the ideology of the Guardianship of Islamic Jurisprudence can be a candidate. The Election Monitoring Service, which is overseen by the Guardian Council, vets the candidates. While women can apply, none have been approved, although the board denies rejections based on gender. Approved candidates are voted on by the public. A majority (50% plus one) is needed to win; otherwise, a runoff is held. Voters get their birth certificates stamped. The Supreme Leader must sign the president-elect's decree for them to take office. The president is then sworn in before the Islamic Consultative Assembly. For this election, more than 61 million were eligible to vote, with approximately 18 million aged 18-30. Voters required identification documents and candidates were under constant surveillance by the Ministry of Information.
