Election Information

General Information:
The presidential elections in Romania were held on May 4, 2025, with a runoff scheduled for May 18, 2025. The election was rerun following the annulment of the 2024 elections due to suspicions of Russian interference in favor of candidate Călin Georgescu. The annulment led to political instability and mass protests across the country.

First Round Results:
George Simion (Alliance for the Union of Romanians - AUR): 40.96%
Nicușor Dan (Independent): 20.99%
Crin Antonescu (National Liberal Union): 19.60%
Victor Ponta (Former Prime Minister): 8.30%
Elena Lasconi (Save Romania Union): 7.80%

George Simion, leader of the nationalist AUR party, secured first place with 40.96% of the votes, while independent candidate and Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan came second with 20.99%. The two candidates will face each other in the runoff election on May 18, 2025.

Electoral System:
Romania employs a two-round system for electing the President of the Republic. If no candidate achieves an absolute majority (over 50%) of the votes in the first round, the top two candidates proceed to a runoff. The President is elected for a five-year term and may be re-elected for one additional term.

This electoral process is pivotal in determining Romania's future direction, particularly concerning its relations with the European Union and NATO, as well as internal political stability.
